Dangerous Liaisons at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company

Dangerous Liaisons is currently being performed at the Cincinnati Shakespeare company until March 10 2013. This is highly spirited drama displaying the hypocrisy, cynicism and decadence the existed in Pre-Revolutionary France. Reputations, values and one's social standing could easily be called into question and became the subject of gossip and ridicule.

Two bored aristocrats and former lovers Vicomete Valmont and Le Marquise de Merteuil invented a cruel game were by the use of deceit, and betrayal, they would carelessly destroy those of moral virtue for their own pleasure. Valmont saw himself as a lady’s man. He through his, charm and wit could have any woman he wanted. However, it order for it to a true display of his talents it would have to be someone of high moral standards above reproach. Le Marquise de Meteuil challenged him to use his talents on the young convent raised virgin Cecile Volanges. However Valmont sought a different challenge the Madame Tourvel a married woman of high morals and standards. If he could seduce her then he has won a true prize. Marquise de Meteuil offers him her love and affections to Valmont if he would also seduce Cecile. Valmont accepts her challenge while attempting his game with Madame Tourvel.

Giles Davies was very skillful, believable, charming and witty in his role as Valmont. He very brilliantly shifted the mood of the audience who saw him as a seducer and user of people to a man of concern and caring, who had got tired of the game.

Corinne Mohenhoff was also skillful, and was excellent in portrayal of La Marquise de Meteuil the calculating and cold blood woman. Bravo.

Baillie Breaux was very good as Cecile the innocent, young lady seduced by deceitful nature of Valmont.

Kelly Mengelkoch as Madame Tourvel was very convincing you could feel the moral struggle within her, convictions fighting against her need for love. Well done.
