Tape Worm

While the tape worm diet has fallen out of favor with dieters and is even illegal in some places, the concept is simple. Those looking to lose weight would eat tape worm eggs. The tape worms would hatch and eat the extra food in the gut of the dieter, and when they had lost the weight they would take medicine to kill the tape worms. Then, the body passes the tape worms the way it passes everything else.
The human body has many symbiotic parasites like bacteria, so what is the problem with some worms? A person with tape worms in their system is considered sick, because you can’t control with the tape worms eat and what they don’t.

Feeding Tube

Known as the feeding tube diet or the K-E diet , Dr. Di Pietro is one of the doctors that administers the diet. Brides-to-be have been a steady clientele for Pietro.
While on the diet, patients are not allowed to eat anything. Pietro charges $1,500 to insert a feeding tube through his patient’s nose, into their stomach, that feeds them a mixture of fats, proteins, and water over ten days.

The problem with this diet is that the weight loss will probably be short lived. Any weight lost will come back, because it is not a lifestyle change.

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Injections

The hCG injection diet limits dieters to 500 calories a day, and dieters must take hormone injections for 8 weeks. According to doctors at the Naperville Rehab Clinic, the injections cause the human body not to go into starvation mode when it is deprived of calories. When the body goes into starvation mode, it uses calories more efficiently and stores as much fat from what you eat as it can.
The diet promises to reset your metabolism and help you lose weight, but there are multiple problems with the diet. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is a medicine used by doctors to stimulate sperm growth in men and egg release in women. It is a fertility drug, and pregnancy is not really conducive to weight loss.
Women using hCG for fertility can develop ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome, which according to the drug’s manufacturer can be “life-threatening”.
So, the drug should not be taken lightly because of the possible side-effects, but it is also possible that people are just losing weight because of the limit on caloric intake.

Grapefruit Juice

The grapefruit juice diet has likely been around as long as grapefruit have been. A grapefruit is a hybrid of a sweet orange and a pomelo. It takes its name from the way grapefruits grow in clusters like grapes do.
There are many variations of the grapefruit juice diets ranging from drinking a glass of juice before each meal to drinking only grapefruit juice for 48 hours.
Obviously, there is something wrong with fasting on grapefruit juice. It lacks in macro-nutrients that are essential to the human body. It does not contain micro-nutrients like vitamin A. It is very acidic as well.
The biggest problem with the grapefruit juice diet is that those likely to try it are more likely to be on obesity related medicines like high blood pressure or high cholesterol medicines. While grapefruit juice has never been proven to burn fat in a scientific study, it has been proven to interact with 85 different medicines like prescription drugs for high cholesterol.
Dr. David Bailey of the Canadian Medical Association ran a study that proved the negative interactions between grapefruit juice and medicine in the human body. At least 15 prescription drugs tested where proven to become toxic in human bodies when combined with grapefruit juice.
Certain anti-depression drugs have also been proven to interact with grapefruit juice. Always read the labels on your medication to prevent this from happening.

Vinegar

The apple cider vinegar diet supposedly helps people lose weight by helping them burn more of their dinner. Those who have tried it say they either took several tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before meals or they took a pill with apple cider in it.
The problem with this diet is that there have been few scientific studies that show the diet works, and most of them have been done with mice. Also, some say that dehydrated apple cider vinegar in pills can be very acidic to the stomach and intestinal lining causing ulcers and other problems.
One study done in 2009 by Dr. T. Kondo showed that there could be a correlation between the acetic acid in vinegar and the expression of fat burning genes in humans, but more research needs to be done before this can be considered safe.

Last Chance Diet

In 1976, Dr. Roger Linn introduced The Last Chance Diet. While following this diet, you would drink Prolinn, a diet liquid made of horse hooves. Basically, the liquid is made of protein, and it’s the only thing you are allowed to eat or drink as long as you are on the diet.
Prolinn lacks essential vitamins and nutrients that the body needs, so drinking only this protein liquid can be dangerous. Many disorders and diseases stem from a micro-nutrient deficiency. Perhaps the most well-known vitamin deficiency is scurvy, which can occur in those who are deficient of vitamin C.

Not Eating Enough

Not eating enough is a diet on its own. The problem with it is that eating too little causes you to loose fat and muscle mass. The problem with that is that your muscles help you have a healthy metabolism. In order to fuel your muscles, you need to burn more calories than if you didn’t have them.
Those who go to extremes to eat the smallest amount of food possible are often diagnosed with an eating disorder, and many people with anorexia nervosa have died.

So, what can you do to lose weight and keep it off?
All sources agree that eating healthier and getting more exercise is the best way to start any weight loss journey.
