Week 7 of season 18 of “Dancing with the Stars” will go down in history not as Latin Night but as the week the stars were injured. Wetpaint reported on April 28 that, in addition to Danica McKellar’s injury in rehearsal, snowboarder champion Amy Purdy was injured during the live telecast. Charlie White also snagged an injury during his performance.
Danica broke a rib during rehearsal with partner Val Chmerkovskiy during the week. She was most likely taped up in order to perform and the injury affected her performance negatively. The judges cited her stiffness of movement.
It was the injury to Amy Purdy that came as a shock. A fan favorite, Purdy had completed her routine and listened to the judges’ comments when it happened.
Backstage, cohost Erin Andrews spoke with an obviously pained Purdy. The athlete said her shoulder had been bothering her but it hadn’t been anything serious, just a bit sore. After listening to the judges’ remarks, she said she turned her head and her back cracked.
“It just seized up and everything's really painful right now. It's hard to breathe."
Andrews said that Purdy would be sent to the hospital to have everything checked out. Amy stated there was no problem during the rumba she and Derek Hough had done. By the time she was heading up the stairs after her performance, however, she was in quite a bit of pain. She was, at that point, hoping it would ease up and she would be able to participate in the team dance.
Later, Erin said Amy would not be dancing. Instead, the judges and viewers would see the forage shot during dress rehearsal. Though television audiences didn’t see it, the remainder of Team Loca, including Danica, performed for the studio audience while the rest of us saw the tape.
Host Tome Bergeron said there was policy and precedent for this situation. Melissa Rycroft was also injured after the dress rehearsal and could not perform. The tape was used in that situation, too.
During the intro package for Meryl and Maks, we saw that both of them were injured in practice. She hurt her wrist and he hurt his leg or groin or some other not-to-be-named part. They both seemed to get past it just fine, though.
Charlie White gave a less than stellar performance. After hearing some of the judges’ thoughts, he remarked that his knee had given out when he landed a flying leap. It normally doesn’t give him a lot of trouble but it had flared up.
Hopefully none of the injuries are tot serious and everyone returns next week ready to dance their best. We’re getting down to the 3end and they all need to be in top shape.
“Dancing with the Stars” will return next week with Abby Lee Miller from “Dance Moms” as a guest judge. Tune in on Monday, May 5 at 7 p.m. on ABC.
