Instead of a theme week on “Dancing with the Stars” Monday night, they welcomed its own pro dancer and two-time champion, Julianne Hough. She returned not as a featured dancer, but as a guest judge taking over for Len Goodman. Currently the head judge is away in England for its sister show “Strictly Come Dancing.” Last week’s leading couple fell to nearly last place, while three top-notch celebs, and their partners, tied with 27 for the top at the leader board.
Brant Daugherty and Petra Murgatroyd danced a wildly salsa, whereby Brant took off his shirt early in the routine. Had Len been around for the judging, he certainly would have scolded Brant. Instead, all three judges felt his shirtless gimmick backfired as it literally exposed his flawed moves. With getting only 7’s, they ended up tied for second to last at the end of the night.
Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Corbin Bleu, and Amber Riley wowed the judges throughout the night. Even Julianne was in awe of what her brother Derek had been able to accomplish with Amber, who was suffering with painful knees. You’d never know Amber had been in a lot of pain with their brilliant tango. Elizabeth and Val’s Argentine tango was not only entertaining, but mesmerizing. Corbin Bleu was the second celebrity to take it all off, his shirt that is. They performed a traditional Flamenco-inspired paso doble that was stunning and captivating to watch. All three dances captured the Latin American and Spanish flavors.
Sadly, but not surprising, was the elimination of Valerie Harper. She had a wonderful run. Had this been any other season, Valerie may have lasted longer. Now the competition is heating up with a committed cast of exceptional dancers. Next week’s theme is the ever popular “most memorable moment” in a celebrity’s life.
