ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" voted off the third celebrity contestant on October 7, 2013 during the fourth week of competition. Tonight we gave a fond farewell to Valerie Harper, her bright smile and positive attitude will be greatly missed.
While we are saddened by Valerie Harper being voted off "Dancing with the Stars" we are also uplifted by her gritty determination to succeed despite a diagnosis of terminal cancer.
Prior to her "Dancing with the Stars" stint Valerie Harper had been diagnosed with lung cancer. The tumor was removed from Harper's lungs and doctors couldn't find any evidence that the cancer had spread.
But the cancer had spread. It had invaded Valerie's meninges which is the layer of membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. This type of cancer is incurable and the 74-year-old actress was not expected to survive past a few months.
But survive she has and in a NBC interview titled, "Valerie's Story", Harper revealed that she was very close to remission. In recent brain scans Harper's cancer seemed to be shrinking. There was hope.
Just a short while later, Valerie Harper began "Dancing with the Stars" rehearsals.
Now, I'm no doctor and I will not speak unkind words about Valerie Harper, I respect her too much. But, I wonder if the cancer is returning? Harper was having a hard time remembering her dance routines which was the main factor in low scores from the "Dancing with the Stars" judges.
I suppose time will tell. In the meanwhile I wish Valerie Harper all the happiness her heart can hold. She was an inspiration to all who watched her dance on "Dancing with the Stars".
But this is a dance competition. Valerie Harper was eliminated from "Dancing with the Stars" on October 7, 2013.
What were Valerie Harper's parting words after being voted off "Dancing with the Stars"?
"It has been absolutely wonderful, unique like nothing else in the world...People, and not only people with cancer but people everywhere, it's like our song tonight you just gotta 'Keep on Keeping on'."
Valerie Harper also made a huge impression on her "Dancing with the Stars" partner, Tristan MacManus. "I'm a better person for having known Valerie."
