Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay said on tonight's episode of Dancing with the Stars that his father gave him one piece of valuable advice he's using now: "Never, ever give up".
Despite Tom's foot injury worsening, Tom was leaning on persistence and perseverance to pull him through the week's rehearsals.
"Your steps were clean and you had a good frame," partner Cheryl Burke said of his last week's performance, where he ended the dance on a bad foot fall resulting in a stress fracture.
Tom was able to improve his posture from prior weeks, which judges had suggested, but getting past an injury wasn't so easy.
"You okay?" Burke said to him in practice after Tom stumbled over his hurt foot on a turn.
But the dance continued.
"What I don't want to happen is to use my foot as an excuse for not spending the time needed to practice," Tom said at the top of Saturday's practice with Burke.
He added, "My father drilled into me as a kid to never, ever give up."
But on Saturday afternoon, during rehearsal, one hurt foot had multiplied into two and the 62-year-old politician was benched by pain.
By the end of rehearsal that same day, partner in dance Cheryl said, "Tom is not giving up and I have a lot of respect for him."
Tom said in his pre-dance video that he doubted the strength of his dancing feet - Both of them injured.
So when Monday night rolled around, the dancing Republican said, before his Samba, "What's a little pain when you can party?"
DeLay hit the floor wearing red and white stripes with partner Burke wearing blue and white stars on her silver-studded dance outfit.
Tom looked nervous as he took the stage but perked up the pep in his step when he double-crossed his way across the stage, reversing his back to the crowd and flashing a red, white and blue elephant on his back.
Dancing to the famous song 'Why Can't We Be Friends' the two dancing stars samba'd their way through a struggle due to the injured Republican star. A sign of the times?
Maybe. But DeLay left no room for disappointment as he swiveled his hips, hands over head before pulling money out of his pockets and tossing them to the crowd.
DeLay and Burke received a standing ovation from the crowd but lacked the same support from the judge panel.
"It could have been more exciting," said judge Cari Ann. "But I know your feet..." she began to explain.
Noting the performance suffered, the judges congratulated DeLay and Burke and explained they can only judge on what they see, while also calling DeLay a "super trooper".
Even still, the flying colors of Tom DeLay and Cheryl Burke was only good enough to pull in a score total of a "15", putting them second from last in the night's competition.
