'Dancing With the Stars' season finale recap

At long last, it was time to see who won this season’s coveted mirrorball trophy on ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ There are three couples in the final: Candace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas, Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Amy Purdy and Derek Hough. There were no guest judges, though each couple danced a last “fusion” dance that will count for half of their score.. Each eliminated couple also got the chance to reprise one of their numbers. Here’s what happened.
James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd danced the first encore of the night, a little odd since they were just eliminated. But, James really seemed to enjoy this dance. His movements had a new authority and seemed less stiff. After that, the Team Loca group number was performed. It wasn’t done live during Latin Week because of Amy’s injury. It’s tight and sharp, though Derek seems a little too fond of the straddle lift with Amy that’s in both this routine and one from last night.
Then, Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX performed the song “Fancy.” It fell a bit flat, not just because Azalea’s comments about her ear monitors overshadowed the opening of the song. Even the elaborate staging didn’t really help this one. Other performances included Amber Riley (last season’s winner) singing, and Meryl and Charlie White dancing together for the first time on the show. NeNe Leakes also got to perform a number. Drew Carey and Cheryl Burke danced a likeable jive, while Danica McKellar and Val Chmerkovskiy did their Disney week dance again. Charlie and Sharna gave another go to their Disney week dance, as well. Cody Simpson and Ariana Grande were also musical guests.
Then, it was time for the contestants’ last dance.
Amy Purdy and Derek Hough: Their tango/cha-cha mix came off beautifully. Derek really gave Amy a chance to show off her footwork. The judges loved it. Score: 30
Candace and Mark: Candace’s nerves seem to have been getting the better of her ever since Mark’s injury. Because of scheduling, they had almost no time to learn the samba/quickstep number they performed. Still, the judges love how hard Candace works. Score: 27
Meryl and Maksim: Bringing together the foxtrot and the cha-cha, this was another technically sound, perfectly synced dance from these two. Carrie Ann said they were her favorite couple. Score: 30
After Christina Perri performed, the results were announced. Candace and Mark were third, Derek and Amy and second and—no shocker here—Meryl and Maksim won.
