Dancing With The Stars season 18 winners: Meryl and Maksim take home the trophy

The finale for season 18 of ‘Dancing With The Stars’ on May 20 was filled with star studded performances and funny bloopers from the taped rehearsals. All cast members previously eliminated appeared and some even performed with professionals.

The finale lasted two hours, the first hour consisting of unseen moments between the stars and their coaches. The second part of the finale consisted of performances by rapper Iggy Azalea, Christina Perry, Ariana Grande, and Season 17 winner Amber Riley.

Three finalists remained for the finale for season 18 of ‘Dancing With The Stars’. Olympic ice skater Meryl Davis, Candace Cameron Bure, and Amy Purdy performed their final dances with their coaches before receiving their final scores and one couple being eliminated.

Many were speculating the possibility of professional coach Mark Ballas dropping out after a health scare yesterday, CBS News reported. During rehearsal with partner Candace Cameron Bure he hurt his shoulder and was rushed to the hospital. Cameras captured the pro dancer as he fell to the ground in agony from the pain. Ballas was not expected to perform with Bure for the finale but pushed through without a hitch.

Many people were rooting for Derek Hough and Amy Purdy as this would have been Hough’s third win in a row. Purdy shared her story of becoming infected with bacterial meningitis and losing her legs as a result. Although, during Purdy’s performances it was hardly noticeable that she was wearing prosthetics as she is an excellent dancer.

All three finalists received high scores but Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Olympic ice skater Meryl Davis received the Mirrorball trophy. "It's just plastic, but it means so much," "And to win it with Meryl is a dream come true. There's a reason it didn't happen before. It's because I was meant to do it with her." Maks said after his first win since season 4.

The couple’s final dance consisted of a fusion of the fox trot and the cha cha in which they received perfect scores from the judges. Maks and Meryl were known for their undeniable chemistry. The judges also made mention of the couple and the connection they shared during their performances throughout the season.
