The April 7 episode of the hit ABC show was the much talked about switch up week. Viewers voted to change the celebrity pairings for this week. No one was eliminated—that’s for next week’s Latin night. Former DWTS competitor Julianne Hough was the guest judge. Here’s what happened when the contestants switched partners:

  • Candace Cameron Bure and Tony Dovolani: Tony definitely pushed Candace’s footwork to be sharper than last week. She was much cleaner in the quickstep. The judges didn’t think her upper body was right, though. Score: 28
  • James Maslow and Cheryl Burke: It was clear that Cheryl is a great partner for James. Their tango was his cleanest, best-danced routine to date. Unlike Peta, she knows how to make him an equal partner in the choreography, so the audience watches them both. Score: 35
  • Drew Carey and Witney Carson: It’s easy to underestimate Drew because he keeps playing the personality card, but this cha-cha showed that he can keep improving. Every week he gets cleaner and more musical. The judges enjoyed the dance’s playfulness. Score: 33
  • Danica McKellar and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: Danica seemed awkward dancing with Maksim. And, from the package, he finds her detail-oriented learning style challenging. This jive felt like a mismatch, with Julianne even questioning whether Maksim really gave it his all. Score: 32
  • Charlie White and Peta Murgatroyd: This dance was beautiful. Peta really understands how to work with Charlie’s lines and capitalize on his elegance without making him look stiff. Len didn’t think the dance had enough rumba content, but the other judges liked it. Score: 33
  • Amy Purdy and Mark Ballas: Mark took a very different style than Derek in partnering Amy for this salsa. He let her dance on her own a lot more. She was very strong in this dance and her hip action is great, which all the judges commented on. Julianne reminded her that she’s more than just an inspiration. Score: 34
  • Cody Simpson and Sharna Burgess: Unfortunately, Cody seemed lost without Witney’s energy to make the routine playful. Sharna’s attempts to coach him have cleaned up his frame in places, but he still seemed stiff during much of the foxtrot. Score: 31
  • NeNe Leakes and Derek Hough: This jazz routine was a major improvement for NeNe. The judges loved her attitude. She drew comparisons to Beyonce and the Queen of Sheba. Score: 31
  • Meryl Davis and Val Chmerkovskiy: Meryl seems to dance better with Val. They were sharp and together during all of their tango. All the judges praised their dancing and their chemistry. Score: 39
