The March 31 episode of the show focused on dances that celebrated the most memorable year in contestants’ lives. It also featured “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts as a guest judge (giving contestants a possible 40 point score instead of 30). There was a lot of a strong dancing and a lot of improvement over past performances, at least for many of the contestants. Here’s the review:

  • James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd.:Their jive, inspired by James’ experience of bullying in school, showed off some major improvements. James still has some issues with his hands, though. At least the high energy of this dance gave him more to do. Score: 36
  • Billy Dee Williams and Emma Slater: Apparently, Billy’s been told by his doctor not to dance due to a back problem. He and Emma withdrew from the competition, so there wasn’t an elimination. The crowd gave him a huge ovation.
  • NeNe Leakes and Tony Dovolani: Their rumba was graceful and sensual. NeNe keeps improving. Bruno still wanted to see better basic technique. Score: 31
  • Cody Simpson and Witney Carson: They danced a jazz routine to Cody’s song “Surfboard.” It continued the modern and overtly sexy style they’ve been working since the beginning. The judges all liked it. Score: 35
  • Danica McKellar and Valentin Chmerkovskiy: Danica wanted to perform a dance in honor of her grandmother and son (her grandmother passed away shortly before her son’s birth). The contemporary routine showed off her control and skill. The judges loved the routine and its obvious sincerity. Score: 36
  • Drew Carey and Cheryl Burke: Drew picked the year his son was born. His waltz felt correct, but his face was stiff and the lack of stage presence didn’t do his technique any favors. Carrie Ann felt that he looked stressed. Score: 30
  • Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: Their foxtrot was a tribute to Meryl’s partnership with Charlie. Meryl danced it with grace and attack. The judges thought it was lovely. Score: 39
  • Amy Purdy and Derek Hough: Amy’s dance celebrates her dad giving her one of his kidneys after she lost kidney due to meningitis. She tried out a new pair of feet for a contemporary routine. She was confident in the dance and is an absolutely fearless partner. Score: 36
  • Charlie White and Sharna Burgess: Their jive was one of Charlie few off moments. He missed the musicality a couple of times. That ruined it for Carrie Ann. Score: 36
  • Candace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas: I don’t know what it is with Candace. She’s always good, but the first performance had some magic that just seems lacking the last two weeks. Her jive footwork was slightly off, too. Score: 32
