Monday night on “Dancing with the Stars” saw a completely revamped show, minus the staircase entrances and long-winded interviews by co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet. Instead, this was strictly dancing with the standard rehearsal videos and mild chitchat from host Tom Bergeron. What made this season premiere stand out is the phenomenal cast of celebrities paired with the right pros. In past seasons there would be one to two exceptional celebrities who were shoo-ins for the finals. Now it will be difficult to decide who’s going home next week.
It’s interesting to note one celebrity who was favored before the start of the season, Keshawn Johnson, did not do as well as other NFL stars in the past. No matter, they always tend to stay on for the long haul. One of the most entertaining celebrities of the night was none other than Bill Nye the Science Guy. He and his partner, Tyne Stecklein, danced the cha-cha to the ‘80s hit “Weird Science” by Oingo Boingo. It was complete with a science lab setting. Needless to say the judges were not at all pleased with his performance. Nye received the lowest score for week one.
On the opposite end of the leader board featured the most impressive couple of the night. “Glee’s” Amber Riley and her partner, Derek Hough, blazed it on the dance floor with a super-charged cha-cha that was fast and furious. Prior to their performance, Amber stated she has always been interested in ballroom dancing. It certainly showed while dancing to “Wings” by Little Mix. They are the fourth couple in the history of “Dancing with the Stars” to score all 9’s in week one. In Season 6 it was Kristi Yamaguchi and Mark Ballas (who later won the mirror ball trophy), along with Mya/Dimitry Chaplin and Aaron Carter/Karina Smirnoff in Season 9.
Valerie Harper captivated the audience with her extraordinary back story and appreciation for life. She could hardly contain her enthusiasm being paired with the dashing Tristan MacManus. Their foxtrot to “Some Kind of Wonderful” was simply breathtaking. Besides the cha-cha-cha and foxtrot, several celebrities did the ever challenging contemporary dance. Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Corbin Bleu, and Christina Milian were extraordinary and earned high marks. Other notable celebrities to definitely watch out for are Jack Osbourne, whose mother was crying tears of joy after her son’s performance, Brant Daugherty, and Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi.
