Dancing with the Stars aired the first results show Tuesday, March 29th on ABC. Each week the celebrity contestant who receives the lowest overall score will be voted from the competition. Scores are a combination of judges points awarded for performance quality and votes from Dancing with the Stars viewers. This week, Mike Catherwood earned the lowest score and was voted off.
The scores a Dancing with the Stars contestant receives from the judges are important from a learning standpoint but the fans are what keeps a contestant in the competition. Take Bristol Palin for example. Palin was a Dancing with the Stars contestant last season, she consistently earned the lowest score from the judges, but she had a huge fan base. Those fans kept Palin in the competition until the Dancing with the Stars finals.
Mike Catherwood could have benefited from a large fan base. Fan votes alone might have allowed him to continue dancing on Dancing with the Stars. But being a radio personality, he is not as well known as some of the other Dancing with the Stars celebrity dancers. Had Catherwood been given the opportunity to dance a while longer, his personality alone might have earned more viewer votes. We will never know however, Mike Catherwood was given the boot.
Was Mike Catherwood upset at being the first voted off of ABC's 'Dancing with the Stars' season 12? Of course he was but admitted, "It was an amazing experience overall...It sucks to be going home first, but it has been a great experience," to host Tom Bergeron during last night's results show. It has also been reported by USMagazine.com that Catherwood has vowed to never dance again!
