‘Dancing With the Stars’ Premiere: Wynonna large and in charge

ABC aired the premiere of “Dancing With the Stars” Monday night, March 18 with twelve couples hitting the dance floor for the first time in season 16. One celebrity dancer that many were eager to see perform was 5-time Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter Wynonna Judd. Because of her size, most thought she wouldn’t be able to move like a dancer, so likely would be one of the first eliminated.

I think Wynonna surprised us all.

While her Cha Cha Cha week one of DWTS wasn’t anything to write home about, partnered with professional dancer Tony Dovolani might have her giving a few of the other couples a run for their money. Larger than life in a beautiful black dress that did little to flatter her plus-sized frame, she gave her all when dancing to “I’ve Got the Music in Me”. Wynonna was surprisingly light on her feet for such a large woman, and I was impressed when I had already decided beforehand that I didn’t want to be.

With her mother and sister (Naomi and Ashley Judd) in the audience to cheer her on, Wynonna’s smile radiated across the dance floor, even if the rest of her body wasn’t exactly on cue. She had fun, and gave her fans something worth applauding. The judges gave her and Tony a combined score of 18 for their first dance which put them near the bottom of the leaderboard, but certainly doesn’t count them out just yet. Since there is no elimination during week one, Monday night’s scores from judges and fans will be tallied and added to week two scores to determine who will be eliminated first.

Will Wynonna’s popularity with her fans carry her through? It worked for Kirstie Alley for quite a stretch.
