“Dancing with the Stars” is heading into its season 18, 2-night finale extravaganza and on Sunday, one of its professional dancers was seriously injured during rehearsal. Mark Ballas, the professional partner of celebrity competitor Candace Cameron Bure, injured his shoulder while rehearsing the couple’s freestyle performance according to People on May 19.
A spokesperson for the show said Ballas “was seriously injured during camera blocking. His shoulder popped out during a lift and he was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he was treated and released. It's unclear whether or not he'll be able to perform on Monday's show."
Ballas and Bure were in the middle of a complex maneuver that required Mark to lift the actress onto his shoulder when the injury occurred. They were doing camera blocking for Monday night’s show at the ABC studio where the show is taped.
Professional dancers Derek Hough and Cheryl Burke were on hand at the studio when Ballas was hurt and rushed over to him on the ballroom floor. While they encouraged him to sit out the performance on Monday, he is insisting he wants to perform. The show is taking no chances and is having another professional ‘DWTS’ dancer learn the routines. That way, someone else can step in with Bure if Ballas is unable to perform.
Ballas, 27, previously injured the same shoulder during the 2007 season while dancing with Sabrina Bryan.
The finals for season 18 of “Dancing with the Stars” will be spread out over 2 nights. Four couples will compete on Monday night in the highly anticipated freestyle competition. At the end of Monday’s show, one couple will be eliminated based on scores from last week and judges’ scores according to Buddy TV. On Tuesday, a two-hour results show will follow the one-hour recap special titled, “Road to the Finals.”
