The quarter finals of “Dancing With the Stars” brought us 2 perfect scores, 1 surprise elimination and some incredible dancing, but what week 8 will really be remembered for is one of the harshest insults ever delivered on the show. The Sioux City Journal discussed the insult and the ramifications in could have for the celebrity in its post on Monday night.
The bad boy of the ballroom is back. Maks Chmerkovskiy, once known for his opinionated ways and his disdain for the judges, has been behaving all season. That is, until Monday night. During the judges’ critique of his rumba with partner Meryl Davis, Maks was quiet. When guest judge Abby Lee Miller from “Dance Moms” criticized Meryl’s feet for having spent too many years in ice skates, being "fickle" feet – whatever that means - and not being pointed enough at times during the dance, Maks looked livid.
Later, as co-host Erin Andrews interviewed the pair while they awaited their scores, Maks could no longer hold his tongue. When Andrews asked him what he thought of the comments from Miller, he replied, “I really don’t care for anything that she has to say.” There was an excited, shocked response from the studio audience and we’re betting from fans at home as well.Check it out in the accompanying video.
Miller is known for her harsh comments and direct approach. Her comments throughout the night were not necessarily harsh but often seemed not to fit what was going on out on the dance floor. The other regular judges could be seen giving her sideways glances and rolling their eyes though out the evening.
Immediately following Chmerkovskiy’s diss, the camera panned to Miller. She looked just stunned. When they returned to her again moments later, she looked angry.
For some, the insult was one that was a long time coming. Miller has been an outspoken critic of the pros on “Dancing with the Stars.” Many of the pros feel Miller is the essence of what a dance teacher should not be – “loud, obnoxious and bullying” – according to the Sioux City Journal.
So what was the upshot of Maks’ comment? He and Meryl still had a Celebrity Dance Duel to participate in with brother Val Chmerkovskiy and partner Danica McKellar. The group got low scores from Miller and to be fair, from Carrie Ann Inaba as well. Val and Danica were sent home, not because of this week’s scores but because of voting and scores from last week.
It is too soon to know if Maks’ insult will hurt Meryl. “Dance Mom” fans could retaliate by withdrawing their votes for the Olympic ice dancer. That would be a shame as Meryl and Maks have been at the top of the leader board for many weeks.
Next week, ABC will present the semi-finals on “Dancing With the Stars.” The stakes will be higher as the remaining 5 couples compete for a chance to go to the finals and take home the coveted mirror ball trophy.
