Jennifer Grey is probably happy she had a desire to appear on season 11 of Dancing with the Stars -- if she hadn't, she may never have found out she had a cancerous nodule in her neck.
In an interview with Zap2it, Grey said that last year she had seen a doctor to try and correct pains she was having as a result of a previous car accident injury, and she also wanted to see if she was healthy enough to be on the show. The neurological spine surgeon -- who has also treated DWTS pro Karina Smirnoff -- told her she needed to get her neck fused, and if she didn't, any sort of new injury like a fall would paralyze her.
As if that wasn't scary enough, the doctor also inquired about a lump in her neck, that Grey had been living with for four years under the impression it was a "benign nodule." The surgeon insisted on removing it, and it turned out to be not so benign, and was cancerous.
But now Grey is all fixed up and ready to have the time of her life on Dancing with the Stars, saying:
"Now, I've got a new neck. And I also have no cancer... [The surgery] was so successful, I proceeded to do everything else on my 'to-do' list that I was afraid of, including doing this show. I figure that if I don't do it now, I'll be too old for it. My body is clearly giving out."
Too old? Fellow contestant Florence Henderson, 76, would like to have a word with you backstage, Ms. Grey.
The premiere of Dancing with the Stars season 11 airs September 20 on ABC.
