Mirror ball trophy fans, get those DVRs fired up because "Dancing with the Stars" season 19 will premiere Sept. 15 on ABC with the first night of a two-evening event, according to a July 15 tweet by the network's publicity department. The news came as ABC big wigs engaged in their summer press tour, which releases plenty of information regarding what viewers can expect during the upcoming fall television season.
Although the "DWTS" celebrity lineup announcement is likely still at least a month away and few casting spoilers have emerged to date, a small handful of professional dancers have shared bits and pieces of information with fans. A July 15 tweet by show spoiler source @DWTSGossip confirmed that popular pro Kym Johnson, who left the show following season 16 to serve as a judge on the Australian version of "Dancing with the Stars," will continue on in her new judging role and will not return to the ballroom.
Two-time pro champion Cheryl Burke, who danced off with the mirror ball trophy at the close of seasons two and three, dished on the show via Twitter and while she served as co-host of "ExtraTV" alongside "DWTS" alum Mario Lopez on July 14. When asked by a fan if she planned to compete during season 19, her response suggested a likely return as she tweeted "It's not 100% confirmed yet." During her TV appearance, she said the show could return to a two-night format "for... a few weeks" and that a fourth judge may be added to the panel.
On the celebrity casting side, although few details are available, at least one big name has already confirmed that she won't compete, despite being named as a rumored contestant prior to nearly every season. TV personality Sharon Osbourne confirmed during an exclusive June 27 interview with Examiner that though she "adores" the show, she will never appear as a contestant because "dancing makes you all sweaty."
"Dancing with the Stars" season 19 returns to ABC on Sept. 15. Watch out for spoilers as they emerge.
