‘Dancing With the Stars’: D. L. Hughley bombs during week one

Comedian D. L. Hughley gave viewers something to laugh about during his debut performance on “Dancing With the Stars” which aired on ABC Monday night, March 18. After agreeing to add his name to the list of the celebrity dancers competing during season 16, Hughley had the brass ones to slam dancers in general while admitting he’d never even watched the show. Who’s laughing now?

During a rehearsal interview, Hughley said that he might have the legs of a chicken, but he has the heart of a lion. That lion didn’t roar on Monday night.

Partnered with professional dancer Cheryl Burke, D. L. made a lame attempt at the Cha Cha Cha for their first dance of the season. His moves choppy and robotic, he showed no evidence of rhythm or grace, and while the judges were boo’d after awarding the combined score of 12 out of 30 points, I think they were spot on.

Carrie Ann:

Ohhh Boogie Fantastic I have some baaad news, that was yyyyyikes, whoa, it was just … you gotta go back to work and practice.

Newlywed Len Goodman doesn’t believe in sugarcoating his comments, and what he had to say about Hughley’s performance week one was no exception.

If any dance is going to suit you it’s going to be the Cha Cha Cha, and this was rough. Next week quickstep, you’ve gotta work your back off. This was no good.

He’s absolutely right. If he can’t pull off the Cha Cha Cha, Hughley is likely to butcher the more graceful dances yet to come. Will he be tripping over his own feet with next week’s Quickstep?

There is no elimination during week one of DWTS, and while D. L. and Cheryl ended up at the bottom of the leaderboard this week, their combined scores from the judges and fan votes on Monday will be added to scores earned next week. Unless Cheryl is able to work some real magic with Hughley during rehearsals this week, it’s my bet that Hughley will be the first to go home.
