"Dancing With the Stars" beauty Karina Smirnoff showed off her chiseled abs and lithe dancer's physique in the October 2013 issue of FitnessRx, where she revealed her diet and workout secrets.
Smirnoff, who has been a "DWTS" pro for 13 seasons, says the athleticism and glamor involved in the reality dance competition has kept her motivated all these years.
"It's the combination of heart and fitness and show biz, the glitz and glamor of the ballroom dancing world — I think all of that made me want to fall in love with it," Karina told FitnessRx.
Smirnoff, 35, has always been in tune with her physicality, having been a dancer for 33 years. "As a dancer I've always embraced my body," she said.
The 5-foot-5 Ukrainian beauty stays fit by running on the treadmill, doing Bikram yoga, dancing, Pilates, Gyrotonics and following a healthy, portion-controlled diet. Smirnoff credits muscle confusion and a varied workout regimen for her stunning size-zero figure.
"If you go to the gym and do the same routine over and over, you’re going to see results in the first two or three weeks, but then you’re not going to see results [afterward] because your body adjusted to the workout level," she said. "So the main thing is to constantly keep changing the workout."
Despite being hailed for her taut, feminine physique, Smirnoff has struggled with poor body image and eating disorders. During her teens, Karina actually stopped eating for two weeks in a desperate bid to lose weight.
"I competed since I was two years old, so I was always trying to be in a certain weight class and a certain shape," she told OK! "When I turned professional there was a period when I literally only drank water for two weeks because I wanted to slim down."
After feeling anxious and weak following the starvation diet, Smirnoff gave up obsessive calorie-counting and now follows a healthy diet. "I try to eat as healthy as I can because if I don’t my digestion and metabolism isn’t working the best way it can," she said.
