According to a March 1 Wetpaint report, when "Dancing with the Stars" 2013 premieres March 18 on ABC with an all-new cast of celebrity Mirrorball hopefuls, soap star Ingo Rademacher will face the unusual challenge of delivering a Contemporary routine for America and returning judges Bruno Tonioli, Len Goodman and Carrie Ann Inaba.
The popular "General Hospital" actor and his pro partner Kym Johnson spilled the beans during an interview with the On the Red Carpet. Johnson appeared thrown for a loop by the assignment, calling it "really out there." She did, however, express confidence in Rachmacher's ability to rise to the challenge.
So far, if nothing else, the two are enjoying their time together. Rademacher tweeted praise for Johnson on March 1, calling her "amazing and Aussie!!!!! MAAAATE! good fun!"
Although the Contemporary style represents a definitive departure from the standard "DWTS" model, which requires celebrity/professional pairs to learn and perform classic ballroom and Latin routines, season 16 doesn't mark its debut. The Fall 2012 All-Star season featured a small handful of unconventional offerings, including Contemporary numbers by third-place finishers Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy as well as winners Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani.
Whether or not the style should have a home on a reality show that features highly trained ballroom dance specialists who know very little about it is debatable, but plenty of fans are less than amused. Popular spoiler source DWTSGossip expressed the thoughts of many by tweeting "Ingo's 1st dance on #DWTS is contemporary. WTF???...Didn't @dancingabc learn anything?"
