Maksim Chmerkovskiy fell this evening while performing a Rumba with Dancing with the Stars celebrity contestant, Kirstie Alley. Alley was not in a position to remain upright when Chmerkovskiy fell, so she tumbled to the floor as well. While Alley seemed to be uninjured, Chmerkovskiy was in obvious pain. The extent of his injury is unknown at this time.
Only missing a beat or two of the music, Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Kirstie Alley picked themselves up and continued. Chmerkovskiy, wincing in pain as Alley whispered encouragement, telling him, "That's alright", the two slipped back into their Rumba with little difficulty. Just as the old saying goes, "The show must go on," well, Dancing with the Stars is no different.
Tonight's Dancing with the Stars challenge was for Kirstie Alley to tell a story through dance, of an important moment in her life. Alley chose to convey her feelings of ecstasy when she was accepted for her first movie role and her agony a few days later when finding out that her parents were in an automobile accident, her mother dead and her father dying.
The dance started out beautifully, then about 20 seconds into the Rumba, Chmerkovskiy fell. The fall hurt Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy judges scores somewhat, but not as bad as it could have. Professionalism pulled them through.
Dancing with the Stars judges were kind. Carrie Ann Inaba told the two, "Sometimes tragedy leads to a beautiful moment. It was touching," and Len Goodman shared, "Dancing is a bit like life. Sometimes you have to overcome...you overcame." Bruno Tonioli critiqued, "You can't keep good talent down, when you got back up it was better than before," and it was. The two earned a total of 21 points out of a possible 30. Not bad, considering the circumstances.
When asked what had caused the fall Maksim Chmerkovskiy was apologetic, taking all of the blame. "My thigh just gave out. It had nothing to do with her...I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," Muscle strain from hours of strenuous rehearsals seemed to be the cause of the fall.
After receiving the judges scores, Maksim Chmerkovskiy disappeared. He simply walked away from Kirstie Alley and the Dancing with the Stars cameras. Why did he leave? It was speculated that he might have gone to put ice on his injuries.
