What possibly could have been the most dramatic dance of the evening was reduced to ruins when Karina Smirnoff tripped on Ralph Macchio's cape during ABC's 'Dancing with the Stars' guilty pleasures week, which aired on April 25, 2011 on ABC.
During Dancing with the Stars guilty pleasures week each celebrity contestant must perform a ballroom dance routine to a song that everyone loves, but is too embarrassed to admit loving.
Ralph Macchio and Karina Smirnoff were to perform a Paso Doble to "Everybody Dance Now". Macchio has steadily been falling on the leaderboard, from the top position to the bottom and he desperately needed to dance a perfect routine in hopes of gaining favor to stay in the competition.
Those hopes were shattered when his Dancing with the Stars professional dancing partner, Karina Smirnoff, tripped on his costume i.e., the tails of his cape and landed squarely on the floor, flat on her fanny. Macchio acted the gentleman and helped her up, made sure she was uninjured, then coaxed her back into the dance.
This was the story as explained on ABC's 'Dancing with the Stars'.
But, what I witnessed while watching Dancing with the Stars was a totally different scenario. As I watched Ralph Macchio and Karina Smirnoff dance the Paso, it looked as if Macchio had placed his foot in the wrong position and that was the reason Karina Smirnoff tripped. She tripped over his foot, not his cape.
When searching for Dancing with the Stars video to back what I had witnessed, I could only find video which had been edited. The actual fall had been cut.
I hope Ralph Macchio will withstand this "unexpected mishap", just as Kirstie Alley did. I don't understand what is going on with ABC's 'Dancing with the Stars', are they grasping for viewers? I know if things don't improve drastically next year I won't be watching and I have been a fan since the beginning.
