What exactly is “Dancing in the Sheets?” “Dancing in the Sheets” is a euphemism for “going belly to belly”. It’s also a series here on Examiner.
“Music hath charms to sooth the savage breast”. It also often has charms to make ladies bare them. Your crusty chronicler, of course, being the shy, innocent white boy he is, would never think of suggesting creating a sexual seduction soundtrack.
Still, the sounds that turn us on was an interesting idea for a fun-filled filler article. L.A. based musicians, East Coast artists and many music fans were polled about tunes that turn them on, songs they heard when they made love and music they listen to while they were “smooshing”. The response was so great the one shot article is now a series.
The title itself- “Dancing in the Sheets”-was inspired by my Facebook friend Steve Delp who used the phrase when explaining the concept to another online acquaintance. Here is the latest bunch of responses:
California-based Sonny Rock, drummer with such acts as The Smokin' Aces Blues Band and Lex Grey & The Storm Front Band, said: “The fellow I tour with is Tas Cru. He has a song on his newest CD, Tired Of Bluesman Cryin', called ‘Time & Time’. It’s a love ballad.” (The track does indeed sound like an old school slow dance tune. That’s always good . . . two bodies pressed together closely in the dark . . . oh yeeaah . . .)
“Swexy” Kittie of Pismo Beach’s famous Orange Cat Café fame says “Michael Bolton's ‘To Love Somebody’” works for her. This is his cover of a Bee Gees song from 1967. (The original doesn’t work just as well if not better? No?)
Philly resident Robert McLaughlin submitted “Time In A Bottle” by Jim Croce. This is a classic from 1973. (It holds up well as a love song and has been included on many compilations.)
New Yorker Frank Sincinito says: “Some Barry White always did the trick” for him. Frank couldn’t pick one but White’s two biggest hits were "You're the First, the Last, My Everything" and "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe." They are both from 1974.
Last but not least, “Designing woman” Mary Sparks likes Kenny Rogers’ "Lady" which was written by Lionel Richie and recorded by Rogers in 1980. The combination of R&B writing and country singing resulted in a pop hit that worked out well for both of the artists.
