Legendary Trisha Brown Dance Company Comes to PlayhouseSquare for One Performance March 8
Final main stage tour honors retirement of dance icon
The Trisha Brown Dance Company will be taking the stage at the Ohio Theatre on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. to perform “Proscenium Works, 1979-2011” as part of the final main stage tour and will showcase the major works of Choreographer Trisha Brown and will be performed in their original theatrical context.
Ticket prices begin $20 and may be purchased by stopping by the PlayhouseSquare ticket office, by calling (216) 241-6000 or may be purchased online at www.dancecleveland.org.
Trisha Brown began choreographing in 1961 and has created over 100 dance works during her stellar career. Among the numbers featured this evening will be “Set and Reset” (created in 1983 and set to music by Laurie Anderson with sets by visual artist Robert Rauschenberg), “If You Couldn’t See Me” (a 1994 solo that Brown created for herself with music and sets by Rauschenberg), “Les Yeus et l’aime” (from 2011 and set to Jean-Philippe Rameau’s ”Pygmalion” and Brown’s last work “I’m going to toss my arms – if you catch them they’re yours,” (which premiered in Paris in 2011 to music by Alvin Curran).
Prior to the performance there will be a talk in the Ohio Theatre at 7:15 p.m. as well as a post performance Q&A session with members of the company.
In planning for the future of Trisha Brown Dance Company, Brown took the title of Founding Artistic Director and Choreographer in 2013. She named Diane Madden and Carolyn Lucas as Associate Artistic Directors. The company’s plan going forward offers a new vision for extending the life of a single-artist dance company, including the ongoing presentation of Brown’s masterworks in both site-specific and museum contexts; and the preservation of her papers, film and video archive, sets and costumes. The president of the company’s board of directors Kirk Radke says the plan “is a bold reimagining of how the public experiences the work of a great choreographer.”
