The Owls defeated Drexel 2-0 this Saturday on the Dragons alumni night. This was Temple’s second road win (2-3 on the road) and brings their overall record to 7-3-1.
Temple went ahead early after the city’s leading goal scorer, Jared Martinelli, struck an absolute firecracker toward Drexel keeper, freshmen Tyler Afferbach. The youngster would make a superb initial save on the strike, but he was unable to keep the Owls from scoring. Willie Chalfont cleaned up Martinelli’s rebound from about 10 yards out with a clean shot past Afferbach in the 21st minute.
Drexel seemed to bounce back a bit, getting some good looks on the net, but Temple keeper Dan Scheck was impenetrable. Scheck ended the game with 4 saves on the Dragons 17 shots.
The Owls managed to outshoot Drexel by one shot and found themselves a second goal in the 62nd minute when senior forward Vaughn Spurrier made a brilliant play. After beating two defenders, he hit a perfectly placed shot toward the far post that was just out of the reach of an outstretched Afferbach.
This victory makes Temple 2-1 within the Philadelphia Soccer Six and it also marks the end of their non-conference schedule. They finished the non-conference portion of their schedule with a record of 7-2.
The Owls will travel to SMU and face off against the Mustangs (2-7-0) next Wednesday at 7:00 pm. SMU is currently ahead of Temple by 2 points in the conference after defeating Rutgers 1-0 at the end of September.
