Julia Child's Kitchen - National Museum of American History
With the new movie, Julie & Julia set to be released on August 7, 2009, it's only fitting that Saturday Night Live's Dan Akroyd gets some applause as the beloved Julia Child.
The French Chef
Julia Child was the one-and-only French Chef. Wikipedia says, "The French Chef was an influential television cooking show created by Julia Child, and produced and broadcast by WGBH in Boston, Massachusetts, from February 11, 1963 to 1973. It was one of the first cooking shows on television." At the end of every show, Julia would say what is now considered her famous tagline, "Bon appétit."
Saturday Night Live
The date was December 9th, 1978. The host was Eric Idle. It was a wild night on SNL. Weekend Update with Jane Curtin & Bill Murray saw Gilda Radner as Valerie Harper, Garret Morris as Chico Escuela, and Don Novello as the cigarette smoking, Italian-accented Father Guido Sarducci. This was the night Dan Akroyd did his famous live impersonation of The French Chef, Julia Child. He followed Julia's tradition by imitating (exagerating) her recognizable voice, and ending the hilarious skit – Save the Liver – by bidding farewell to SNL viewers with, "Bon appétit" as he bled to death carving a chicken.
Julie & Julia
In the 2009 movie, Julie & Julia, Meryl Streep plays the towering 6' 2" Julia Child. It's no wonder Dan Akroyd portrayed Julia so well, as it's believed he was just about the same height. Put a wig and some fake boobs on him and he makes a great Julia Child! As you're sitting in the theater on August 7th watching Meryl Streep play Julia Child in Julie & Julia, watch with renewed interest. It's a good bet you'll get a chuckle along with everyone else that remembers seeing Dan Akroyd in the classic Saturday Night Live skit!
