After a long, and sometimes unforgiving, 18 year career, Damian Dragon retired after winning the prestigious ECWA Super 8 tournament in 2013. The culmination of a lifelong dream, Dragon did what so many seemingly can not do, retire on his own terms and go out on top. This Saturday, July 12, Dragon will be inducted into the ECWA Hall of Fame in Delaware.
The last stop in Dragon's career was the East Coast Wresting Association based in Newark, Delaware. Established in 1967, ECWA has long been considered a top destination for independent wrestlers. Many of the top stars in WWE have crossed through ECWA most notably Daniel Bryan and Christian. The Super 8 tournament has been a springboard for careers throughout its history helping several wrestlers either gain more recognition on the independents or catapulting them to a national stage.
ECWA provided a place for Dragon to ply his trade, and form a tag team with young Matt Saigon. Together they became FUSION D.S. The tag team won the hearts of wrestling fans, and the two became friends to this very day. What's odd is that the tag team was a last minute replacement created out of a booker's need when another tag team failed to show up for an event. This was the catalyst, and FUSION D.S. was born in early 2011.
Within ECWA, they captured the tag team championship three times. They were finalists in the second annual K-Cup. They branched out and won the WXW-C4 Samoan Cup in 2012. In late 2012, they wrestled for one of the top independents in the country when they competed for Ring of Honor. They also won the New Moon Rising Wrestling tag team title in early 2013. In addition, they were named to the Pro Wrestling Illustrated Weekly Top Ten Tag Teams five times, a feat that was never before or since been replicated for an independent tag team.
Damian himself had a great 18 year career. He was originally trained by WWE Hall of Famer, Johnny Rodz. He received further training from former WCW wrestler, Big Vito. In all, Dragon left his fans with many memories that they will never forget. He was a one of a kind wrestler that put his heart into every moment and simply wanted to put on the best match on the card.
He will be inducted into the Hall of Fame by his longtime partner, and friend, Matt Saigon. It will be perhaps the last time that the two will ever be inside the same ring together. The induction is just part of a great card taking place Saturday night. Make sure you check out the ECWA website for tickets and further information.
