RBC Heritage fan favorites John Daly, Brian Gay, Zach Johnson and Hunter Mahan joined the impressive list of PGA TOUR professionals committed to play in the 45th annual event, tournament officials announced Friday. The RBC Heritage will be contested April 15-21 over the Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island.
Daly, who has five wins on the PGA TOUR, will be making his 10th appearance at Harbour Town. Known for his colorful clothes and sincere appreciation of his fan base, Daly recently shot his lowest round in five years at the Sony Open in Hawaii.
Gay, named January's Avis Player of the Month by PGA TOUR fans, won at Harbour Town in 2009 by 10 strokes, topping Davis Love III's seven-stroke win in 1998.
During the 2012 RBC Heritage, the video of Gay’s caddy Kip Henley scaring off an alligator on Harbour Town’s No. 15 green went viral. The gator eventually left his post by Gay’s ball and the professional was able to play his shot into the green, much to the delight of patrons seated in the sky boxes on the hole.
Johnson won the hearts of all RBC Heritage fans when he played in the 2007 tournament after winning The Master the previous week. In the 2012 tournament, Johnson finished second, five strokes behind winner Carl Pettersson.
Mahan is one of four golfers in the PGA TOUR exclusive boy band "Golf Boys" (the other three golfers are Rickie Fowler, Ben Crane and Bubba Watson).
International PGA TOUR professionals KJ Choi, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell and Rory Sabbatini recently committed to the 45th annual RBC Heritage and former RBC Heritage winners Carl Pettersson, Brandt Snedeker, Stewart Cink, Glen Day, Jim Furyk, Justin Leonard and Boo Weekley have also committed to play.
The entire group will be shooting for the top prize of $1,044,000 from a purse of $5,800,000.
