At this year’s recently concluded San Francisco International Wine Competition, a local winery made a big splash. Fuqua Winery of Dallas was awarded a Double Gold Medal for its 2006 Tempranillo. This same wine received a gold medal at the 2009 Dallas Morning News Wine Competition, setting the stage for its big win in San Francisco.
"This is really a big deal for any winery," said Lee Fuqua, founder of and head winemaker at Fuqua Winery. "Not many people ever win a Double Gold Medal."
Gold medals are prestigious on their own, but a Double Gold can only be achieved when all five panel members, each a recognized wine expert, deem a particular wine worthy of a gold medal.
Fuqua wines can be found at a few select restaurants and at several Dallas-area Sigel’s stores. But better yet, the winery’s tasting room is open Saturday and Sunday from 12:00pm until 6:00pm, so stop in for a taste and take home a bottle or three. The award-winning Tempranillo will set you back $27.95.
