Dallas Morning News gives Garland residents a chance to be heard

The Dallas Morning News is asking readers for their opinion on Garland's method of euthanizing animals after last week's blog that seemed to jump to the conclusion nothing would change.  But that's not the case.  Garland residents can make change.  They can have their voices heard.  And the Dallas Morning News is giving them a forum to do so t "Residents Help Define The Shelter Conversation.

Anyone can leave a comment and weigh in on the issue.  If you live in Garland, be sure and state that in your remarks. Then email or call your representative on the City Council and let them know which method you'd chose for Garland's homeless animals. They really need to hear from you.  The City of Garland website lists all the council members - click on any name on the list and you'll get their phone # and email address.  And there's also an easy-to-use district map in case you don't know who your representative is.

There are shelters, rescue groups and other animal welfare organizations in North Texas and nationally that will help if Garland will let them - from Kaufman County Animal Awareness Program wants to do more spay/neuter in Garland to Garland Bark Park, a group that holds offsite adoptions for Garland Animal Service's.  And literally dozens of rescue groups that would gladly pull animals out of Garland's shelter to foster and rehome if only they were invited to help.  And there are individuals, too -  local consultants and shelter advocates, as well as experts from HSUS and the ASPCA, and many more, who would be happy to help.  Some of these folks even live in Garland and would be happy to be involved as part of the Animal Services Advisory Board

There is no lack of help available.  But Garland residents have to insist their elected representatives ask for it.

STOP GASSING ANIMALS! Its a horrible way to die, why is Garland the last city of its size to still KILL animals like this? and if you're not an amimal lover ....It's bad for for the health of the employees. Just stop it already!!! I live in Garland and will gladly pay the extra $.04 per animal if Garland would just show a little compassion.

Change is coming to the Garland shelter and the animals it serves will be better off for it. Thanks to all of you who have insisted upon it. Please continue to follow their story and attend the Garland city council meetings. Kudos to all of you for providing a voice to those who have none! God bless.

I hope putting a light on this very serious issue will be the catalyst that is needed for more residents of Garland, Texas to stand up and demand from their city leaders that major improvements be made to their city's animal shelter. This is your city, your pets and your opportunity to make your voices heard. You are the voting public and you CAN bring about these changes with your phonecalls, emails and letters to the Mayor and members of City Council. Gassing is beyond inhumane and those who are minimizing that should be made to be present each time an animal is gassed. It needs to be outlawed in every shelter in every city, town not only in Texas, but all states. Animals can bring such joy into our lives, they deserve our protection.

i do live in garland, and if it weren't such a serious issue...that whole four cents more per animal...i'd laugh. he's serious about that comment? this needs to stop. you can turn in any animal at that shelter for any made up reason in the world. my friend was there the day the supervisor yelled at some woman there trying to rescue some puppy. we were both outraged. turned out that puppy was labeled a pit bull, and garland's policy it to gas pit bulls or any mix that might have pit. they don't adopt them out at all. my friend said that puppy was like six weeks old or something! so they gassed it? give me a break garland. animal cruelty seems to be the name of the game with you people. four cents! when you can spend four more cents and let a dog go to sleep with someone taking a freaking moment to pet it, comfort it...are you kidding? who wouldn't do that? oh, yeah, garland animal 'services.' nice.

STOP GASSING ANIMALS - SHAME, SHAME, SHAME on you City of Garland officials and especially SHAME ON JASON CHESSER - this man should not be in charge of living beings.

I heard about this horrible torchure all the way in Ohio. We have wonderful No Kill shelters where these animals can live out their life and possibly be adopted by loving families. Its unforunate the abuse that is happening in Texas. My loving animal came from a shelter and I fully believe in giving these animals a chance for a full life. Please take the necessary steps to stop gassing, this is inhumane for all involved.
