There is a new place in town that I had been wanting to check out, the Gas Monkey Bar N' Grill, and Friday night was the perfect opportunity since one of my favorite local bands, Back in Black, was playing. This club is located at 10261 Technology Blvd E, which was once the home of the Firewater Bar & Grill. I have to say, I was impressed. I loved going to this venue when it was Firewater, and the place has been sorely missed, but it is back bigger and better than ever, with the addition of an upstairs balcony and VIP room, along with a sound system that you can feel vibrating every bone in your whole body when you are in front of the stage. Check out the video to see the view from the upper level of Back in Black on stage.
Another big plus for the Gas Monkey is that the drinks are very reasonably priced - I had a Long Island Ice Tea for a surprising $6. Monday through Friday Happy Hour is 3 - 7, with discounted drinks and appetizers. Saturday and Sunday there is $5 You-Call-It Beer from 5 - 7, any beer, any size, including the 22 oz. draft craft beers. There is an extensive menu with some unusual selections such as Texas Pale Ale & Beef Short Rib Chili, Red Chili Grits, Grilled Artichoke Hearts, Fried Green Beans, Fire Roasted Tomato Ancho Soup, Grilled Banana Split, and Buttermilk Pie.
The Gas Monkey Bar N' Grill was opened by Rick Rawlings of the Discovery Channel's show "Fast and Loud", which features Rawlings and Aaron Kaufman restoring cars for profit at their Dallas-based garage called Gas Monkey Garage, hence the name of the venue . . . Gas Monkey Bar N' Grill. Friday night someone from the Discovery Channel was filming Back in Black's performance, so I am anxious to see if it will air on t.v.
Back in Black, a tribute to the rock band AC / DC, is one of the top cover bands you will ever have the chance to see. As anyone in attendance Friday night could attest to, Back In Black rocked the house! The set list for the night was extensive, but Back in Black played even more than planned, adding several songs including Problem Child and Have a Drink On Me. Among the seventeen AC / DC hits on the set list this night were Money Honey, Shook Me, Long Way, Dirty Deeds, and TNT, with Hells Bells, Thunderstruck, and For Those About To Rock as an encore. You can see the complete list in my slideshow. It was an incredible night. In case you didn't make it out to this show, it was announced Friday night that they will be back in November, even though it doesn't show up on the venue's calendar as of yet. Members of the band are Darren Caperna (vocals), Mike Mroz (lead guitar), Eric Sykes (bass), Scott Lepage (guitar), and Ken Schiumo (drums).
There are some exciting things coming up at The Gas Monkey Bar N' Grill. October 26th, Richard Rawlings himself will host the Haunted Monkey Halloween Bash with cash costume prizes, great food, and great music provided by Rock N Roll Over, a KISS tribute band, as well as Out of the Cellar (Ratt tribute) and Stargazer (Dio tribute). Rock and Roll Over came in second place recently in a worldwide KISS tribute band contest with hundreds of competitors from all over the globe. Metal Shop will be playing Halloween night, when there will be an 80's style costume contest, also with prizes. The Misfits are coming to the Gas Monkey on Nov. 6. Then on Saturday, Nov. 23rd, The Marshall Tucker Band will be rocking the stage. Back in Black will be back on Nov. 30th. You can see info about all upcoming shows here. Find something you like, and check this awesome place out for yourself.
