Dallas' drought eases a bit, but it is far from over

Heavy rainfall Jan 8-9 did not erase north Texas’ drought, and it’s still classed as severe in most areas, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor report.

The report is based on data collected through the Tuesday of each week; the Jan 15th report (released Jan 17) shows most of north Texas is in a “severe” drought classification, with the easternmost portions of the Metroplex in a “moderate” drought.

Much of the Dallas-Fort Worth area moved from the drier “extreme” drought to the “severe” category, so some improvement was noted thanks to the precipitation Jan 8-9.

A dry pattern is expected through the next week or so; given warmer than average weather in the forecast, drought conditions are expected to gradually worsen once again.
