The Dallas Cowboys have some lofty expectations for the upcoming 2014 season, and they're passing them along to their fans. ESPN reported on Aug. 1, 2014, that the Cowboys sent season-ticket holders their weekly tickets along with a little something extra. Those extras happens to be a sheet of playoff tickets and a ticket to the NFC Championship Game.
Let it be known that the Cowboys have not been to the NFC Championship Game since 1995. They haven't even been to the playoffs since after the 2009 season.
In the last three seasons, the Cowboys have gone 8-8 each one.
"It's a convenience for our season-ticket holders to have everything in one package," said Brett Daniels, the Cowboys director of corporate communications. "It's an evolution to be fan-friendly. They have their tickets online and if we clinch a playoff berth they go to the computer and click they want the tickets."
NFL.com has let it be known that this is something that no team in NFL history has ever done. NFL's senior vice president of club business development, Brian Lafemina, said that he fully expects other teams to follow the Cowboys' example.
"It's operationally efficient for the teams, and it's convenient for the fan," Lafemina said. "There are times when teams don't know if they are hosting a playoff game until a week before, and doing this helps eliminate some of the friction that exists among the teams and fans. This dovetails nicely with our new policy. If a fan says they will pay if a game is played, the team can now charge that fan and the ticket is already in hand."
The Cowboys' organization has sent playoff tickets to season-ticket holders each of the past three years because the team was in the playoff hunt. When it came down to it, they weren't eliminated from playoff contention until very late in the last three seasons.
With that being the busy holiday season, the Cowboys thought it might be best to get ahead of that rushing around and making fans a little nervous. Now, they've already got their possibly-needed playoff tickets in hand.
A letter that came with the Dallas Cowboys' season tickets and playoff tickets read:
"Included in this package are your 2014 playoff tickets and parking (if applicable) for two potential home games at AT&T Stadium," read a letter that came with the season tickets. "The barcodes on the tickets will be activated when a home playoff game is clinched and the tickets have been paid in full."
