Dallas area drought reflected in rainfall and lake levels

North Texas continues in the grip of a severe drought according to the May 29th

Drought Monitor report.

Scattered May showers have watered back yards around the Metroplex, but they’ve done nothing significant to improve north Texas drought conditions. In fact, area reservoirs continue to drop and with summer heat coming soon this is anything but good.

Rainfall during the past month has been generally below average, continuing a trend we’ve seen all year. Some 30-day rainfall totals include (inches):

Arlington………………....2.86

Corsicana………………..5.14

Dallas-Love……………...3.86

DFW…………………….3.39

Denton…………………...2.33

Fort Worth…………….…2.37

McKinney…………….….2.96

Mineral Wells………….....1.70

May average rainfall is just under 5”, so you can see some places received a fair percentage of that while northern and western portions of the Metroplex like

McKinney and Fort Worth didn’t fare so well.

Rainfall for the year at DFW year-to-date is less than half of the average at just 7.32” (through May 29) compared to a YTD average of 15.93”.

North Texas lake levels illustrate the drought even more clearly:

Lake levels (above sea level) / feet below normal / % of normal:

Eagle Mountain 641.40 / -7.60 / 66%

Grapevine 524.42 / -10.58 / 63%

Lake Lavon 480.65 / -11.35 / 52%

Lake Lewisville 514.24 / -7.76 / 67%

Ray Roberts 623.97 / -8.53 / 72%

The precipitation outlook for the summer is inconclusive, while there's reason to hope that a developing El Nino will improve rain chances by the late summer or early fall.
