There has been a great deal of tension between the Chinese authorities in Beijing and His Holiness the Dalai Lama over the years. Beijing insists the Dalai Lama is a criminal who is trying to split off Tibet from China, and the Dalai Lama insists this is not so. Phayul.com reported on Sept. 5, 2013, I don't seek independence: Dalai Lama.
The Dalai Lama, who has devolved all of his political powers in the Tibetan charter to an elected leadership, as now exists under Dr Sangay, has said, "I am not seeking independence. The world knows that." He has been called a demon by the Chinese communist leaders, but he says he doesn't really care what they call him. He says he ignores that.
The Dalai Lama has gone on to clarify that he does not have any magical healing powers. He commented to a crowd recently, "I don't have any healing power, instead I need some healing for my itching problem here," as he pointed to a spot behind his neck. And so the Dalai Lama continues to have a charming sense of humor in spite of the continued stressful situation he must cope with in dealing with Beijing.
