Here's a brief roundup of the major stories in film news for Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014:
Johnny Depp in talks for 'Doctor Strange'? -- Just hours after the major announcement that Michael Douglas has been cast in Marvel's upcoming superhero flick 'Ant-Man' comes word the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' star is in very early talks to star as 'Doctor Strange.' Latino Review reports Depp took a meeting to discuss the role of Doctor Strange -- who is admittedly one of Marvel's stranger superheroes. For the uninitiated, Doctor Strange is one of the most powerful sorcerers in the Marvel Universe and often battles powerful demons. Even if Depp is cast as the Sorcerer Supreme, Marvel has no plans to produce a 'Doctor Strange' film before 2016, after 'Avenger 2: The Age of Ultron.'
'Lone Survivor' scores big at the box office -- The true story of a doomed SEAL team operation received one of the biggest box office weekends ever in January. According to box-office tracking website The-Numbers.com, the film's $38.2 million weekend was the second biggest for a film debuting nationwide in January. The sci-fi monster flick 'Cloverfield' and its $40.1 haul still holds the title of biggest box office opening in January. That said, 'Avatar' still owns the three best box office weekends in January - earning $68.5m, $50.3m and $42.8m in consecutive weeks. 'Lone Survivor' was listed among the Top Ten films of 2013 by the National Board of Review.

Starting Friday, Jan. 17 - Fox Searchlight will re-release '12 Years a Slave' and Warner Bros. is setting up 'Gravity' for an encore theatrical run.
