Reggaeton singer Daddy Yankee (AKA Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez), 36, has issued a public statement denying he is gay as per reports from the L.A. Times on April 3.
A photo of a man who closely resembled Daddy Yankee kissing another man surfaced on the internet on Wednesday. Fans in the reggaeton world were left wondering if the singer was or was not gay.
The Puerto Rican singer quickly released a statement in which he explained: "I am a human being like any other, with virtues and defects, and I don't believe that this is a defect."
He continues: "Now, again to you ignorant ones: the Internet is where the lies become truth and truth becomes myth. Wake up, bobo!"
He adds: "I have people on my team who are gay, and I respect them entirely and give them work.”
Apparently many in the media had their speculations to the Daddy Yankee’s sexual orientation. The well-known reggaeton singer is recognized for songs such as “Gasolina”, “Limbo” and “Somos de Calle”.
A public relations firm associated with Daddy Yankee’s camp also responded to the media frenzy:
"Online blogs and social media are once again to blame for the spread of false news reports, which other media outlets have also shared regarding a public figure. The reports circulating regarding Daddy Yankee's declaration of homosexuality was falsely written by an online outlet known for fabricating false information and spreading it through social media sites."
As a public figure, Daddy Yankee has been involved in charity work with the Red Cross and looks to make a positive impact in the Latino community. He is scheduled to perform at the Latin Billboard awards alongside singers such as Marc Anthony and Juan Luis Guerra on April 25.
