Dmitriy Kanarikov, a 35-year-old father of a 3-year-old boy, threw his son off a 52-story high skyscraper and then he jumped off the building, according to a New York Daily News report on Sunday.
It is believed that the father killed himself and his son, Kirill, in Manhattan because the father was distraught over a custody battle. Kanarikov reportedly died immediately at the Lincoln Square tower at 12:05 p.m., but his son died shortly after at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital.
Three months before the tragic occurrence, Kanarikov – who is an immigrant from the Ukraine – asserted on his Facebook on Sept. 15 that he aspired to be an outstanding spouse and parent. He wrote that he wanted to be the best dad and husband, and he indicated that nothing was more important to him at that time.
Likewise, his wife, Svetiana Bukharina, wrote on her Facebook page in March of this year that she had the best husband and son in the world.
Recently, the couple separated and a custody fight ensued. Things got so bad between them that they had to drop off and pick up their son at the New York Police Department’s 17th Precinct station house rather than privately. On Sunday, Kanarikov picked up Kirill at 10 a.m. at the station house and was supposed to return him there at 1 p.m.
