Dad found unfit to stand trial after carving pentagram into son’s back

Brent Bartel, the Richland Hills’, Texas father who carved a pentagram into his son’s back with a box cutter on Dec. 12, 2012 because, as he said then, “it's a holy day,” was declared by a Tarrant County judge to be incompetent to stand trial and committed to a psychiatric hospital.

On Feb. 28, The Daily Mail reported that:

Doctors have diagnosed Bartel as paranoid schizophrenic, and a judge has ordered him to spend at least one year in treatment at Kerrville State Hospital.

Bartel called 911 after carving that pentagram into his son’s back.

He told the 911 operator: “I shed some innocent blood.”

When asked to elaborate, Bartel said “I cut a pentagram into my son’s back.”

When asked why he did that, Bartel replied “because it’s a holy day.”

Police speculated at the time that the holy day in question was 12-12-12, although there’s no religious significance associated with that date.

Following his Dec. 2012 arrest, Bartel was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

During the course of his recent mental evaluations, the 40-year-Bartel “made several bizarre statements to doctors,” often managing to incorporate religious overtones at his interviews. For example:

“There’s a lot of spiritual warfare going on.”

“I was hearing voices coming through the television, back when I was on block 56.”

“When I leave here, I’ll fast and eat only rabbit pellets for 40 days.”

“Devil makes sounds that don’t bounce.”

“Electromagnetic pulse can detonate people.”

Bartel’s original charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon is considered to be “an enhanced crime because it was committed against a family member,” according to CBS News.
