A man is accused of killing his 18-month-old son who police said was shot in the chest with a BB gun Friday morning in southeast Atlanta.
Mr. Jesse L. Sellers, 23, was charged with felony murder and second-degree child cruelty in the death of Jesstin Sellers, according to Atlanta police.
He was being held without bond in the Fulton County Jail Friday.
Around 9:15 a.m., officers responded to the Boyton Village apartments in the 1000 block of Hank Aaron Drive.
They found the toddler with a wound to his chest and later determined he had been shot with a BB gun, police spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones said.
Police said three adults and three children were inside the home at the time of the shooting.
Jesstin’s uncle, Mr. Willie Dickerson, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he arrived at the apartment to find Mr. Sellers standing outside crying.
“I asked him what was going on and he said, ‘I accidentally shot Jesstin’,” Mr. Dickerson said.
The child was transported by ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Neighbor Ms. Gelisa Lowe told the paper that Mr. Sellers apologized to police.
“He said, ‘I’m sorry, but I didn’t mean to’,” Ms. Lowe said of Sellers.
Police have recovered a BB gun from inside the apartment near Braves Stadium.
Mr. Dickerson said he believes the incident was an accident.
“He usually doesn’t pull guns out around children,” Mr. Dickerson said of Sellers. “He said he was trying to scare him. From what I know, the BB came out and pierced the baby’s chest.”
Police have requested the state Division of Family and Children Services to assist in the investigation.
