Dachshunds use acupuncture for back problems

Anyone who owns a Dachshund knows that the long ergonomically-incorrect body shape can lead to terrible back problems.

One of the ways to relieve those lumbar issues is through acupuncture, and it's being tried successfully in Japan.

See the series of photos that were taken by Adam Pretty for Getty Images, of Chocolate, a miniature Dachshund, who is receiving acupuncture therapy to help with lumbar disk herniation. The procedure is taking place at the Marina Street Okada animal hospital on April 12, 2013 in Tokyo Japan.

The number of pet dogs in Japan has been increasing steadily to 11.5 million animals, almost one-fifth households. One-tenth of Japanese families have at least one dog, according to the survey of Japan Pet Food Association.

Certainly, some dogs are as afraid of needles as humans are, but the procedure can work to relieve stress and pain.

Before you turn your dog into a porcupine, of course check with your vet to see if it is appropriate for your canine. There are such things as a certified veterinary acupuncturist and veterinary chiropractor.

In some cases, Dachshunds that were unable to walk are now regaining full body function, as in the case of Zoey from Stillwater, Minnesota. The dog is nearly 15 years old and had the dreaded Type 1 Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD).

Usually, dogs with IVDD lose all the use of their back legs and can quickly become paralyzed.
