The real-life version today stars a red Dachshund named Idgie and a paralyzed black-and-white cat named Ruth.

They were left at the end of a gated driveway, hoping that some well-to-do neighbor would take them in. Thankfully, they weren't separated, because the unusual pair are inseparable, according to Jacqueline Borum, who has taken them in.

The Dachshund was protecting the kitten, who can't move its back legs, and Borum owns Hollywood Houndz Boutique & Spa in Lake Mary, Florida.

The dog protects the kitten from anyone who comes in, and they have visitors now who come specifically to see the pair, who got some exposure in the Orlando Sentinel newspaper.

"We’ve seen friendships between dogs and cats before, but never anything like this," Borum says.
