With church-abuse trial looming, Cardinal's death will be probed
Top news in San Francisco is about the death of Cardinal Bevilacqua which will now be looked into since its timing appears very odd. The Cardinal was known as having denounced homosexuality as a 'moral evil.'
Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua (beh-vih-LAH'-kwah) was 88 years old when he passed away on Jan. 31. Church officials had told press, according to newser.com, that Bevilacqua had suffered from both dementia and cancer when he died.
But no autopsy was ever performed on him.
And this happened just a day after a judge in Philadelphia had found Bevilacqua competent to testify at the trial of his aide. That aide has been accused of child endangerment, says the Daily Mail in the UK.
"It does look somewhat suspicious," says San Francisco resident, Carla Morris.
Newser.com reports: "Defense lawyers for Monsignor William Lynn say he kept accused priests in ministry on orders from Bevilacqua."
Now the District Attorney in the case, Risa Vetri Ferman, of Montgomery County, has told reporters that she doesn't want any "speculation swirling" about how Bevilacqua died. She wants the truth to come out.
D.A. Ferman has told press that currently there is no criminal investigation of Bevilacqua's death going on.
The County Coroner, Walter Hofman, has said that Bevilacqua probably passed away in his sleep from natural causes.
