Sections of the D&L Trail in Lehigh County from Laurys Station north to Treichlers Bridge were blocked this morning from downed trees after a severe Thursday evening storm. Strong winds, rain and lightning ripped through parts of Lehigh and Northampton Counties in PA after 8 pm before heading into Warren County in New Jersey.
Crews from the Lehigh County Parks Department rushed to the trail at Laurys Station early this morning after learning of downed trees blocking the trail. They cleared much debris and at least 20 trees which fell across the trail in about a 1.5 mile stretch. PPL crews were also repairing power lines at the Laurys Station trailhead and nearby on Route 145 after part of a large tree crashed down.
Wind damage also caused numerous trees to tumble at residences along the trail. Sections of a cornfield along Cove Road leading to the Treichlers trailhead were toppled. Several bikers out for a morning ride were shocked when they saw all of the damage.
The trail is open for bikers and walkers but some areas may be a little narrower than normal over the weekend from the fallen trees. The Lehigh County crews will be back on the trail Monday morning; to finish cutting, chipping and blowing debris from the trail in the affected area.
