D-II Report: Virginia State Upends JCSU, Fay State Takes Viking Classic

Justin Thorpe hit Willie Stubblefield in the end zone with 41 seconds left to help Virginia State knock Johnson C. Smith out of the ranks of the unbeaten, 19-17, at Rogers Stadium in Ettrick, Virginia.

Thorpe set up the winning score after he found Gene Holloman for a 35-yard catch to the JCSU 6.

Keahn Wallace did his best to keep the Golden Bulls (3-1) undefeated, completing 28 of 48 passes for 322 yards.However, he managed to throw just one touchdown, a 42-yard pass play to Chris Patterson that cut JCSU's deficit to 13-10 in the third quarter.

Wallace also rushed for an 11-yard score in the fourth quarter to give the Golden Bulls the lead, 17-13.

The Trojans (3-1) took the lead early when Jordan Anderson scored from nine yards out in the second quarter for a 7-3 VSU lead.

Thorpe found Jaivon Smallwood for a 14-yard TD pass play in the third quarter to put VSU ahead, 13-10.

Fayetteville State 31, Elizabeth City State 27

Derek Bryant hit Antonio Allen from four yards out in the fourth quarter to help the Broncos (2-2) win the Down East Viking Classic at RM Athletic Conference in Rocky Mount.

Bryant completed 14 of 20 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns for Fayetteville State.

In the second quarter, trailing 13-0 after the Vikings (0-4) got two field goals from Brett Symonds and a 17-yard TD pass from Casey Turner to Darius Wilson, Bryant responded with back-to-back deep bombs.

He hooked up with Kasunn Williams for an 84-yard score and then hit Juwan Moye for a 70-yard pass play that gave FSU a 14-13 lead.

Turner made 32 of 48 pass attempts for 383 yards and two scores. Petey Boone led ECSU and all rushers with 16 carries and 142 yards.

Keith Strickland had eight catches for 127 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

After Allen's toucdown, Elizabeth City State had two more chances to score, but Turner's passes on fourth-and-5 at the FSU 48 and then the FSU 20 fell incomplete.
