Cynthia Nixon: Gay is a better choice

Actress Cynthia Nixon from Sex in the City and most recently the Broadway revival Wit is proud of who she is and what she has been through. A breast cancer survivor, mother, and partner to her girlfriend Christine Marinoni, Nixon has endured a great deal. As a woman who wears many hats in her life, she realizes the importance of keeping things in perspective, realizing what is worth fighting for, and who you should have on your side. An LGBT activist and strong proponent of gay marriage alongside the Human Rights Campaign, Nixon has spoken out on several accounts on the issues of same-sex marriage. What are her summary of her experiences?

As a woman that has been married toa man and is now in a committed same-sex relationship with a woman, Cynthia Nixon finds experiences in both of her worlds, straight and gay, have taught her a great deal. Nixon comments:

“I gave a speech recently, an empowerment speech to a gay audience, and it included the line ‘I’ve been straight and I’ve been gay, and gay is better.’ And they tried to get me to change it, because they said it implies that homosexuality can be a choice,” Nixon told the NYT. “And for me, it is a choice.”

“I say it doesn’t matter if we flew here or we swam here, it matters that we are here and we are one group and let us stop trying to make a litmus test for who is considered gay and who is not,”

Controversial words from an LGBT activist. Nixon’s message is one of inclusion, attempting to close the gap between the straight and gay community. Aat the end of the day, everyone wants the same thing – to be happy regardless of their sexuality.
