Actress Cynthia Nixon from Sex in the City alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and the Broadway play Wit caught heat for her statements regarding being gay as a personal choice she made in her life. Now, the actress has released a statement as of January 30, 2012 clarifying her thoughts on the matter, making clearer what she originally intended to share with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. An LGBT activist, many fans and fellow activists were upset she would use the words ‘choice’ in regards to sexuality. In her recent statement, Nixon does take back her original statement but adds that she identifies herself as a bisexual woman who happens to be in a gay relationship.
Gay and lesbian relationships are regularly scrutinized by the media and public alike. When a celebrity recognized for her efforts in the gay community goes out and makes a statement such as Cynthia Nixon did, many wonder what the motivations are. Relationships are as unique as the colors in the rainbow. Each person has their own way of looking at love and choosing who to love. While sexuality and its origins are constantly a hot button debate issues, many consider being gay, bisexual, or transgender to be a natural trait you are born with. Sexuality, in today’s society has become such a strong way of labeling and identifying someone, it makes sense that Nixon might have been cautious about sharing her true sexuality with others. Here’s the statement Cynthia released as quoted by The Advocate:
"My recent comments in The New York Times were about me and my personal story of being gay. I believe we all have different ways we came to the gay community and we can't and shouldn't be pigeon-holed into one cultural narrative which can be uninclusive and disempowering. However, to the extent that anyone wishes to interpret my words in a strictly legal context I would like to clarify:
"While I don't often use the word, the technically precise term for my orientation is bisexual. I believe bisexuality is not a choice, it is a fact. What I have 'chosen' is to be in a gay relationship.
"As I said in the Times and will say again here, I do, however, believe that most members of our community — as well as the majority of heterosexuals — cannot and do not choose the gender of the persons with whom they seek to have intimate relationships because, unlike me, they are only attracted to one sex.
"Our community is not a monolith, thank goodness, any more than America itself is. I look forward to and will continue to work toward the day when America recognizes all of us as full and equal citizens."
