A collision between a cyclist and a semi left a biker dead this morning. The accident happened at the intersection of Park Avenue and 14th Street East in Minneapolis, where both the truck and the cyclist were traveling north. The cyclist was in the designated bike lane. The truck driver did not see the cyclist and turned left, hitting and killing him. KARE11.com reported that the cyclist was an adult male, but no other identification has been made. It is unknown whether or not the cyclist was wearing a helmet. Chris Keating from 5 Eyewitness News Midday reported that the driver will not be cited.
The accident is a grim reminder of the dangers cyclists face when commuting by bike. The recent Bike To Work Day celebration gave city transportation experts an opportunity to highlight positive changes being made to make biking a safer option for commuters and recreational cyclists. But last year's spike in cyclist deaths and today's accident only underscore the reality that drivers still need to be reminded to look for bikes on the road.
