Cyber-civics classes prepare students and parents about digital awareness

Keeping up with social media can be nearly impossible.

Wouldn't it be great if our schools and parents all worked together to educate and inform our kids about what lingers in cyberspace as well as digital citizenship?

Everyone is too familiar with the epidemic of cyberbullying. In a recent McAfee June 2014 Study of Teens and Screens, not only did it reveal that cyberbullying has tripled, sadly it showed that 24% of youth would not know what to do if they were harassed or bullied online.

We have read that many kids, especially teens, are more tech savvy than their parents. This is more reason for parents to be involved in learning and gathering as much information as they can about what is new online as well as what the net-lingo is.

Cyberwise co-founder, Diana Graber is a cyber-civics teacher in California and was recently featured in a spotlight presentation about how her classes are making a difference with children and parents - specifically in the area of cyberbullying prevention.

We have to remember that kids spend more time with media than they do with their parents or in school,” said Diana Graber.

There couldn't be a truer statement. If you walk down a street or in a mall, almost every tween or teen has a cell phone sewn into the palm of their hand. If a parent is with them, chances are good their parent has a cell phone with them too.

Online safety is always a priority, but as Diana Graber mentions, with the ever changing world of technology, and new apps being added on a daily basis, it can be hard to keep up.

What doesn't change is the fact that parents and students could be involved in ongoing cyber-civics courses to stay up-to-date with these changes. There is hope that cyber-civic classes will start being part of all schools across the country.

Until then, Cyberwise offers some great learning hubs to start.
