The CW confirmed today that Misha Collins, Castiel of "Supernatural" fame, will return as a series regular in the show's ninth season. He will be directing an episode of the series, as well.
Collins, who was introduced as "Castiel" in S4E1 "Lazarus Rising," was made a series regular in season five but was then reduced to a recurring character in seasons six through eight. In total, Collins' Castiel has appeared in fifty of the series 167 episodes, so far, and has become quite a fan favorite.
Season eight has brought about new circumstances for the character. In previous seasons we learned that the Angels had their own agenda when it came to the Winchesters and the Apocalypse. This season has shown that they will go to great lengths to control their fellow Angels as well.
